Portrait photo basics

Use a recent, front-facing passport-style portrait that clearly shows the applicant. The current official eVisa application form requests a 4 × 6 cm image in JPG or JPEG format, under 2 MB, with a straight face, white background, no hat and no glasses. Recheck the live government form before submitting because technical requirements can change.

Can I take the Vietnam eVisa photo with a phone?

A phone photo can be usable when it follows the current official portrait rules. Use the rear camera where practical, stand in even natural light, keep the camera level with the face and ask another person to take the image. Do not use portrait-mode blur, beauty filters or automatic background replacement.

Open the original file at full size before uploading. Check the eyes, hairline and face edges for blur, confirm that the background is plain, and make sure the file has not been reduced by a messaging application.

Passport copy requirements

The passport image is different from the portrait. Upload the complete passport biodata page used for the journey. All printed text, the passport photograph and both machine-readable lines at the bottom should be sharp and visible. Avoid glare, shadows, cropped corners or fingers covering the page.

Place the open passport on a flat surface and photograph it directly from above. Check similar characters—such as the letter O and zero—at full size. Never digitally change the name, number, dates or photograph.

Common photo mistakes

The most preventable problems are an old portrait, a busy or grey background, glasses, a cropped head, shadows across the face, a passport-page reflection and files repeatedly saved through social or messaging apps. A file that looks acceptable as a small thumbnail may be unreadable when reviewed.

Keep the portrait and passport biodata image as two separate files. Reopen both files immediately before submission and compare the passport page with every identity field entered in the application.

What to do if the upload portal rejects the photo

An upload error does not necessarily mean the portrait violates a hidden photo rule. First confirm that you selected the portrait file—not the passport-page image—and that the original opens normally as a JPG or JPEG under the current 2 MB limit. Export a fresh copy from the original image if the filename, extension or previous compression may be causing the problem.

Do not repeatedly shrink a clear image until the face becomes soft or pixelated. The current form states an under-2-MB limit; it does not publish a separate 1 MB portrait rule. If a compliant file still fails, preserve the original, try a fresh browser session and recheck the live government form for any updated message before changing the image itself.
